How much does your chip box hold, and what will the job cost to dump?
Enter the inside size of your chip box, how full it usually goes, and how your dump charges. You get the volume per load in cubic yards and cubic metres, and the dump cost for the job.
How it is worked out
Length times width times height gives cubic feet; 27 cubic feet make a cubic yard, and a cubic yard is about 0.76 cubic metres. Measure the inside of the box, not the outside, and be honest about how full it really goes, because chips settle and nobody drives with a heaped load for long.
Keeping dump fees from eating the margin
Dump fees are easy to forget when you quote and easy to lose track of after. In Arb Astra you log each one against the job with a photo of the receipt, and it comes off that job's margin, so the report tells you which kinds of work actually pay once disposal is counted.
Questions
Should I measure the inside or the outside of the box?
The inside. The walls and the frame can take a surprising amount off the volume, especially on a box with a rounded or sloped front.
How do I find my dump fee?
Your local transfer station or yard waste site publishes it, usually per load, per cubic yard or per tonne. If it charges by weight, weigh a few typical loads once and use the average per load here.
